Duluth is the Best Weekend Getaway in the Midwest

Duluth is the best weekend getaway in the midwestEverywhere you look right now, fall colors are all over Minnesota, marking the transition from what has been an extraordinary summer to the long months of winter and lie ahead.  The chilly weather outside has us turning more and more indoors, searching for cozy hideaways. It’s the perfect time to treat yourself to a getaway in Duluth, considered by many to be the best weekend getaway in the Midwest.

What makes Duluth such a delightful weekend getaway in the Midwest is the sheer variety of things to do and see in the city no matter the weather outside. Whether it’s getting outside for an adrenaline-pumping adventure, touring local craft breweries, or enjoying the arts in this culturally-rich Northwoods city, there’s no shortage of things to do in Duluth.  And, to see it all, you’ll need at least a few days.

Luckily, you have two great options for lodging for when you do eventually get to Duluth; The A.G. Thomson House Bed and Breakfast, located in the historic Congdon Mansion District overlooking Lake Superior, or down on the shores of the lake itself at Solglimt Bed and Breakfast, located on Duluth’s Park Point. Each of these historic Duluth Bed and Breakfasts excel in unmatched hospitality and will be a welcome respite from the grind of every day.

Things to do in Duluth

As far as planning the best weekend getaway in the Midwest goes, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better destination than Duluth. With breathtaking views of Lake Superior just about everywhere you turn, Duluth really is a beautiful destination. This rugged city becomes, perhaps, even more beautiful in the winter, when the landscapes are covered in the sparkling glow of ice and snow.

As you consider planning your weekend getaway to this exceedingly romantic city, we thought we’d share with you a few of our favorite things to do in Duluth in the winter:

  1. Enjoy some downhill skiing and snowboarding at Spirit Mountain, which, after a long summer of closures, we’re looking forward to supporting over this coming winter.
  2. No wintry weekend getaway in the midwest is complete without a little cross country skiing and snowshoeing.  There are so many incredible trails around Duluth, including those at Lester Park, Hartley Nature Center, Mangey-Snively Park, Spirit Mountain, and Snowflake Nordic Center.
  3. Try something new and go ice climbing on one of Duluth’s waterfalls, like at the popular Gooseberry Falls State Park.
  4. Instead of the traditional skiing, snowboarding, or cross country skiing, try something new this winter and go fat tire biking!  There are some great trails at Spirit Mountain which are lift-served downhill runs.
  5. Duluth is, of course, a great fishing destination year-round, and perhaps no more sport more quintessential to Minnesota than ice fishing.
  6. There are 9 incredible craft breweries in or near Duluth worth visiting, as well as a couple of cideries and a distillery worth visiting for the true craft beverage enthusiast. Hopping from one brewery to the next is one great way to spend a weekend getaway in the midwest!
  7. During the winter, when it’s bitterly cold outside, Duluthians often turn inside and enjoy plenty of live music and entertainment. Twin Ports Nightlife is your best source to stay up to date with what’s happening in Duluth.
  8. There are plenty of snowmobile trails in Duluth, and there is perhaps no other way to experience the magical winter wonderland that is the North Shore than by getting out of the city and experiencing the breathtaking beauty on snowmobiles.
  9. Cold weather in Duluth doesn’t mean you have to stop dining, shopping, and enjoying your weekend getaway in the midwest.  The Duluth Skywalk is an easy way to still experience some of the best of Duluth without having to go outside into the frigid cold.
  10. Cheer on the participants of the annual John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon, which is a 400-mile qualifier event for the famed Iditarod race in Alaska.
