The National Scenic Byways Program is a collaborative effort among states to recognize, preserve and enhance certain roads across the United States. In so doing, they open parts of the country to travelers, presenting breathtaking landscape, unique historical and cultural sites, ancient history and man-made wonders. Anyone willing to fill a tank with gas (or tune-up a bike) and head down a scenic byway is guaranteed to have an experience worth having.
Minnesota has many scenic byways to entice travelers off the beaten path of the interstate, just a few of which are mentioned here:
- In the northern section of the state, the Edge of the Wilderness Byway winds through forests, over rolling hills, and along pristine lakes.
- To the northeast, the North Shore Scenic Drive hugs the shore of Lake Superior, the largest freshwater lake in the country. Travelers along this road will pass eight state parks and the Superior National Forest.
- Great River Road hugs the Mississippi River on the eastern border of the state. It meanders through quaint river towns and larger cities, ever a reminder of the importance of the Mississippi.
- The Minnesota River Valley Scenic Byway in the south passes through rich agricultural land, and follows the footsteps of American Indians and Euro-American immigrants.
- Grand Rounds Scenic Byway passes through the preeminent urban parkway system of Minneapolis, past countless lakes
- Historic Bluff Country Scenic Byway, south of St. Paul, invites travelers to stop at innumerable antique shops, art galleries, historic sites and museums.
