October is the perfect time for a visit to the St Croix Valley. The fall colors are peaking and local orchards, vineyards and a very special chocolate shop downtown Hastings are offering samplings. Try a fine sip of Marchel Foch from Alexis Bailly Vineyard and Winery or a crisp bite of Connell Red or Honey Gold from the orchard at Carpenter Nature Center or Afton Apple Orchard or the most divine dark chocolate pecan truffle or madadamia fudge melt in your mouth treat from Creative Confectionaire. Then sample the amazing geography along the hikng – biking path of Hastings (12 of the 15 miles along waterway) with an ever changing panorama of color. OK and one last treat, stop in at Classic Rosewood Inn to raid the cookie jar. Ask about their “Fall for the Valley Packages” and plan ahead to “Wonder Winter Packages.”
See songbirds up close and watch the experts band birds at Carpenter Nature Center near Hastings Classic Rosewood Inn. This happens the fourth Friday of every month except December when it is the third Friday( 8:30 AM to noon). Bird banding records show how long birds live, where they travel, and when they migrate. Donations of black oil sunflower seeds and suet are welcome. Any guests of Rosewood who donate $50 or more or products to the Nature Center will receive a $50 gift certificate toward a future stay. They just need a receipt from Carpenter’s for their donation.

The Minnesota Bed and Breakfast Assocation (MBBA) become the first state wide lodging association to develop a green certification program. Entitled. Green Journey the program recognizes member Inns who are making a commitment to be good environmental stewards.
Inns participating in the “Green Journey Program” are on a journey to decrease their environmental footprint and operate their businesses in a socially responsible manner. Participants realize that being environmental and socially responsible, is the right thing to do, good for the environment and the community. Members of MBBA’s Green Committee, which developed this program, do not see reaching a fix goal but rather a journey whereby each year participants seek to advance their environmental level of achievements.
Under this program Bed and Breakfasts are awarded up to five Green Leaves and one additional green plus symbols (+) based upon their level of participation. Five green leaves and a green + represent the highest level of green achievement.
Many Green Journey inns have also been recognized as a green-friendly-sustainable businesses by “Green Routes,” a Minnesota based independent non-profit authentic travel self-certification program. Green Journey Inns so recognized also display the Green Routes logo.
Currently over half of the hundred and four MBBA member inns are enrolled in the Green Journey program.
