Little Women – Community Sing Along

This weekend (Dec. 17 – 18) you can enjoy 2 special events celebrating the Christmas season in Lanesboro.  The Commonweal Theatre has masterfully adapted Louisa May Alcott’s  “Little Women” – telling the story through the perspective of a Christmas family gathering.

Commonweal Theatre performs Little Women Performances are scheduled for Dec. 16th – 22nd.  Tickets are limited so plan ahead.  Tom Weber from the Rochester Post Bulletin calls Little Women “simply sublime …  [Little Women] seems to effortlessly create the kind of warmth we seek in any holiday story“  All who have seen the play and treasure the original book have come away touched.  View a Little Women Trailer to learn more.  For tickets call the Commonweal at: 800 657-7025.

Community Sing AlongOn Saturday Dan Choinard returns to Lanesboro to host a community sing along.  Dan will bring his accordion and heart warming stories to help us enjoy the evening.  Dan is a Minneapolis native who plays, tours and records regularly with an ever-expanding roster of musicians and writers.

Dan will be joined by many local Lanesboro musicians to make the evening complete.  Contact the Lanesboro Arts Center for tickets at: 507-467-2446.

St Croix Valley Bird Banding and Snowshoeing

Bird banders at Carpenter St Croix Valley Nature Center in Hastings meet weekly to capture, record, band and release songbirds. Friday December 17th (8:30 AM to noon), the public is invited to watch. There is no admission fee but it is nice to call ahead (651-437-4359) to let them know you are coming. Donations of black oil sunflower seeds are especially welcomed this time of year. The tiny redbreasted nuthatch is a winter specialty at Carpenter’s and quite fun to watch as well as a variety of woodpeckers, the purple finch, white-winged crossbill and the American goldfinch and dark eyed junco. Trails and interpretive exhibits are open daily and a self guided trail map is avaialable. Guests of Classic Rosewood in Hastings and Afton  House in Afton enjoy the trails even in the winter when snowshoe rental is available. Nearby is Afton State Park with snow shoe rental ($6) as well as groomed cross country trails.

Good Early Winter Snow on the Gunflint

Get your skis out; winter has arrived on the Gunflint Trail.  Over the last few days ten inches of additional snow have  fallen on the Gunflint Trail. The groomers are out rolling and packing the ski trails in preparation to setting tracks. The Banadad and Central Gunflint Nordic Ski Trails now have fifteen or more inches of snow.  Pincushion and the Upper Gunflint have a bit less.  They expect that some tracks will be set by this weekend.  Two b&b’s are located along the trails- Poplar Creek Guesthouse is on the Banadad and Pincushion is located on the Pincushion system.  For current trail conditions go to ski trails.

Victorian Holidays at LeDuc Estate in Hastings

Tours of the LeDuc Estate in Historic Hastings take on a special glow this time of year (December 4-5 and 11-12). Plan to do Christmas shopping in the museum store there and find good old fashioned value in antiques, embroidered dish cloths (finished with 1860 patterns) felted purses, beaded jewelry and even rock candy and cracker bread. A substantial collection of books related to Minnesota history is available as are some stunning works of local photgraphers. Tours are $3 to $6. Then for a very special experience, make reservations for the Victorian Holiday Dinner December 5th and 12th at 5 pm. (651-43707055) This experience can be packaged with an overnight or two at the Classic Rosewood Inn also decked out for the holidays with Victorian details with a Santa collection and angel collection and at least a dozen trees including a very special tree adorned with baby shoes in what was once the nursery. Ask for the Victorian Holiday Package when reserving either the second or third weekend in December.

Holiday Fun in Central MN!

Come to Central Minnesota November 18-20th  for some unique events to get you in the holiday spirit!

The Pillar Inn, Cold Spring, MN, will host a Holiday Market on Thursday, November 18th, from 530p-730p.  Items available for sale will be custom-made jewelry by Cherish Designs, Tastefully Simple items, Scentsy items, craft items, and more!  Complimentary appetizers and wine will be served and guests are welcome to tour any open guest rooms at the inn which are decorated for Christmas!

Friday evening (3-8p) and Saturday (9a-4p) the St Cloud Historic & Neighborhood Preservation Assn hosts their Victorian Holiday Boutique in an 1880′s Victorian home at 327 4th Ave S, St Cloud.  Local and regional artisan gifts will be available along with tea, crumpets, live music and more!  (tea and music will be in another location in a beautiful historic home two blocks down). $2 admission.

Also on Friday evening, downtown St Cloud with have the very cool Art Crawl from 5-9pm.

And, the Zonta house will be open to tour Friday evening 3-9p, and Saturday 9a-4p at 1008 Celebration Circle, Sartell MN.  This event charges  admission of $10 at the door (goes to a good cause) and you see a gorgeous home decorated for the holidays by various local businesses.
