Make plans now to join us February 5 – 7 for a “Flurry of Fun in February” highlighted by the 18th annual Whalen Candlelight Ski on Saturday evening. Start at the Whalen Town Hall at dusk, ski for a mile by candlelight and warm yourself by the bonfire. Then ski back to Whalen for another bonfire, homemade soups, sandwiches and hot beverages at the Whalen Town Hall. Skis can be rented at Cedar Valley Resort.

Lanesboro’s downtown district will be candlelit at dusk where restaurants, shops, Bed and Breakfasts and the Lanesboro Art Center await your visit.

For all of us that live in Minnesota, Wisconsin, or the northern region of the country, we know that winter not only feels long, but often is depending upon when that “last Spring storm” hits us. But what we all know from being able to live and work in this beautiful part of the country is that if you don’t embrace it, you will be miserable. That sentiment is one of our favorite things about Duluth and being able to live in, love, and be the caretakers of the A G Thomson House Bed and Breakfast. Year round, the city of Duluth offers so much to visitors and residents alike; from the extraordinary beauty of “our” Lake Superior to the shopping, dining, theaters, symphony, etc. There truly is no shortage of things to see and do up here; whether it’s dining at one of our many fine restaurants and cafes, or outside on one of our extraordinary nordic ski trails, or downhill on the slopes of Spirit Mountain! Not only are we Innkeepers and “concierge’s” for this great Lake Superior city, we are proud residents who love it here and are eager to share it with you!

And one of the great annual events during this beautiful season is coming up this weekend, January 29th. Events for the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon begin this Friday, January 29th and runs to February 4th. One of the favorite and most popular events is the Cutest Puppy Contest on Saturday, January 30th. This is so adorable and a must see to help kick off the 27th Annual Event! The Root River State Trail is groomed for cross country skiing. Weather has been great the past 2 weeks to maintain good skiing conditions. There are plenty of places to snow shoe as well.

Fall’s First Snow on Gunflint Trail

First snow of the season! Over the last two days the Mid-Gunflint aroung Poplar Creek Guesthouse B&B has registered about three and one-half inches of snow. More is predicted through Monday. But don’t break-out your skis just yet. The trails still need more work; the swamps and ponds along the trails are not frozen and it is quite likely we will have some more warm weather before we finally settle into our winter season sometime around mid November.

Spring Snow on Gunflint no April Fools Joke

April Fools Day brought 12 – 14 inches of heavy wet snow to the Gunflint Trail’s Poplar Creek Guesthouse B&B and along the Banadad Ski Trail. On the morning of the first with guests planning to leave for home the roads and driveways into the B&B’s two rental cabins had to be cleared. Plowing began at 7:30 am and five hours later the two and half miles of roadway to the Gunflint Trail was open and the guest were able to drive-out. In departing the guest declared the snow fall was great and they would not have been disappointed had they been snow bound for another day.

Then guess what? It is still snowing- so far another 3 inches today.

The Banadad remains snowed-in. The trail groomer is expected to begin opening the Trail on Friday, after the snow has settled a bit making it easier to groom. It is anticipated that about 5 or 6 kilometers of the east end of the Banadad and the Lace Lake Trails will be tracked by this coming weekend. According to Boundary Country Trekking which maintains the trails, it is anticipated that with the addition of this snow fall the Banadad should remain ski-able well into April.

Total measure snow on the ground at Poplar Creek Guesthouse is now 32 inches.

First Skiers through the Gunflint Trail’s Banadad this Winter

Gunflint Trail-With the temperature hovering above freezing on December 27, the ski conditions on the Banadad Ski Trail were not great, as Erik and Karl Hoeg became the first skier to complete the entire 31 kilometer Banadad non-stop this winter. The two boys time was about 4 hours. They both are very good skiers and they explained afterwards that had the ski conditions been better they certainly would have made the trip much faster. Their parents shuttled a car to the western end of the Banadad then skied in from the western trail head, about 7 kilometers, where they met-up-with Erik and Karl. The pair were staying at one of Poplar Creek Guesthouse B&B’s cabins with their parents.

Current ski conditions on the Gunflint Trail, with 20 inches of snow on the ground, are excellent.
