The Loghouse & Homestead Bed & Breakfast is an elegant country inn cradled amidst 115 acres of fields, hills and maple woods, adjacent to nearly a mile of private lakeshore. Luxury, pampering and privacy are its hallmarks. Located near Vergas, MN in picturesque Otter Tail County, this B&B is surrounded by more than 1,000 lakes, curving roads and rolling hills, free of billboards and full of wildlife.

The 115 acres is a wildlife refuge that attracts both the four-footed type and a myriad of birds. Loons nest in a secluded cove, heralding the arrival of spring with their haunting call. A pair of eagles, whose nest can be seen across the lake, cause anxious cries of alarm when they soar overhead looking for prey. A wetland dubbed the “Beaver Bog” and another called “Peepers Pond” have been preserved. Sixty acres of woods are enrolled in a Sustainable Forest Program and 20 acres of fields are covered by Reinvest in Minnesota (RIM).

The Loghouse & Homestead is a one-of-a-kind bed and breakfast, combining the beauty and peacefulness of the land with luxury amenities and personal attention. It is set apart enough to “be away” but still accessible to a wide range of area activities and events. Visit us online at: www.loghousebb.com >

Every year in February, I experience the first rumblings of spring planting excitement in my soul. I begin to pore over seed catalogs and browse Internet sites to decide what new varieties I might want to try in my garden this season alongside my favorites. I acquired my passion for gardening from my father, who farmed in addition to his full-time employment at the Minnesota State Highway Department in Brainerd, and from my mother who tended huge gardens to feed our family of twelve children. As a child, I remember accompanying my parents to buy seeds at the “Little Farm Market” in Brainerd where we purchased seed in bulk. We would pour seeds from a canning jar secured with a special lid with a spout that flipped open to allow the seeds to slide into a small manilla envelope. I proudly accepted the responsibility of writing the seeds’ names on the envelopes.

Recently, I purchased a set of 8 canning jars with old seed labels still affixed to the jars’ sides. They are lined up in a row and housed in a well-worn wooden box.The labels detail seed information (i.e., how to plant, # of days to germination, light requirements) found on seed packets today, but it is old-fashioned typewriter print complete with frequent mistakes nontypical of Microsoft Word documents today. The greatest treasure is that the jars still contain old, old, very old seed! To my delight, when Whiteley Creek Homestead Bed and Breakfast guests spy the old seed jars lined up proudly in a row, they begin to share childhood memories of their own! >

Lucy has been to ‘boy camp’ in January and the visit was successful! Lucy is in a motherly way!
For those of you that don’t know ‘Lucy’ she is our Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. You can see her picture on our website www.embracingpines.com
Many have tried to encourage her to come and stay in their room with them, and still some have tried to slip her in their bags on the way out, but Lucy knows the rules and she knows that she needs to stay here and be our ‘greeter’! That is her job and she takes it seriously.

We are expecting the arrival of the new additions about March 20. It is only a couple of more weeks to wait and we are excited.

Stay tuned for updates on our new additions.

Whichever you want to call it, you are going to get a great breakfast at our house, if we can help it. When you come to our house, you can have that first cup of coffee on the deck, in your room, in the common room, or in the Great Room on that big leather sofa in front of the fireplace! There were those this weekend that wanted us to put the air conditioning on, so that we could light the fire in that hearth. The solution was to build a nice roaring fire in the firepit outside. It just isn’t cool enough to start that indoor fire yet.

The hummingbirds are declining in numbers and the feeding schedule is down to about 1 1/2 quart per day. I think that it is the youth that are still lingering. The Baltimore Orioles are up to about 1 quart of grape jelly every 3 days. I think that they are also helping with the hummingbird juice.

The canoes are both out today and that paddle down the lazy river seems to be the thing to do today. I hope that the eagle are in the nest!!!

The snacks will be freshly coming out of the oven when those paddlers return and the aroma will be inviting, if I don”t burn the muffins! I won’t, and they will be delicious!
I’ll put the coffee on too! Come on over and have a muffin with us at Embracing Pines Bed & Breakfasst…. www.embracingpines.com you will be glad that you did! >
