Fall’s First Snow on Gunflint Trail

First snow of the season! Over the last two days the Mid-Gunflint aroung Poplar Creek Guesthouse B&B has registered about three and one-half inches of snow. More is predicted through Monday. But don’t break-out your skis just yet. The trails still need more work; the swamps and ponds along the trails are not frozen and it is quite likely we will have some more warm weather before we finally settle into our winter season sometime around mid November.

The Paul Bunyan Bike Trail is yet another step closer to the long awaited completion. These pictures were taken on the trail about 500 feet from Embracing Pines Bed & Breakfast near Walker, MN. When completed the trail will cross the Heartland Trail so you will be able to ride for 4 different directions without moving your vehicle when you start at Embracing Pines! Root River Valley Fall Colors

Labor Day has come and gone. Cool, crisp nights are upon us and the first maples are starting to show their fall colors.

South East Minnesota beckons you with vistas and valleys, hardwood forests, and plentiful wild life.

Farms form a patchwork quilt of crops awaiting harvest on the rolling country side. The Amish dry their corn the old fashioned way with rows of corn shocks standing tall to catch the fall breezes.

See the Fall Colors by day along the edge of the Boundary waters while spending your nights in secluded B&B’s in Ely and the Gunflint Trail. Your first two nights are at Ely’s Blue Heron Bed and Breakfast, located on South Farm Lake at the western gateway to the Boundary Waters. Canoe and hike right from the B&B. Then drive from Ely to the Gunflint Trail along the southern border of the BWCA via the scenic backroads- known by locals and driven by few others. Picnic beside a remote picturesque lake or creek enroute. Stop at one of the north woods most remote taverns- the Trestle Pines Inn. On the Gunflint Trail, the eastern Gateway to the Boundary Waters, you spend two nights at Poplar Creek Guesthouse B&B. While on the Gunflint hike-in to the overlook at Honeymoon Rock, mountain bike, canoe. Finally on your way home you travel along the incredibly beautiful North Shore Drive of Lake Superior- a National Scenic Byway.

The fall leave color season runs from mid September through mid October but varies in timing in different areas of the forest and along Lake Superior. The fall Boundary Waters colors are spectacular!

LEAF DAYS at Maplewood State Park

Autumn is continuing her parade of splendor, spreading her skirts over the hills of Maplewood State Park near Pelican Rapids. Brilliant red sumac marches up the hillsides, multi-colored maple tips peek through the green; and the yellows of the early turning ash, birch and poplars punctuate the whole.

The Friends of Maplewood invite you to join the march under this canopy of color this coming weekend (9/30 & 10/1), as well as the 7th & 8th of October. Have lunch at the Friends’ 40 ft kitchen wagon donated by Elmer’s BBQ. Enjoy Elmer’s smoked turkey legs and authentiic Texas BBQ plus Brats and an assortment of sweets. All proceeds will go toward a picnic shelter as a memorial to Josh Hanson who was killed recently in Iraq. Josh is the son of Ranger Bob Hanson, manager of Maplewood.
