Fall colors in the Root River Valley

During the week is a great time to visit.  The Root River bike trail is quieter.  All you can hear is the wind rustling in the trees and the crunch of new fallen leaves under your bike tires.  MBBA member inns are ready to welcome you to our pretty corner of the state.  Hillcrest Hide-Away B&B, Habberstad House, Anna Vs, Scandinavian Inn, and Berwood Hill Inn each offer unique lodging, bountiful breakfasts and welcoming innkeepers.  

Lanesboro offers more that bike touring.  You can visit the Amish community nearby.  The Amish will soon be harvesting corn for winter storage.  You can see the corn shocks drying in the fields.  The Amish bakery is one of my favorite stops.  Fresh, glazed donuts, cashew crunch, home made bread, and apple turnovers are just a sampling of what you will find.

As you visit the Amish, tour many of the ridge roads that offer mile after mile of beautiful fall foliage throughout Fillmore county.

The Commonweal Theatre is performing two plays this month: “Little Shop of Horrors” and “To Kill a Mockingbird”  Both plays have been lauded as outstanding performances.    Plan your fall leaf color tour to Lanesboro: “a quirky combination of the outdoors and the arts.”

The LeDuc Estate in Hastings

in Hastings Tuesday October 12 at 7 pm. Enjoy readings, conversation and signed books for sale. Pam Thorsen of Classic Rosewood Inn holds special regard for these authors not just because she is a fan of their writing and has their books in the libary at the Inn for guests to enjoy but also because they are neighbors, Amy living in a sweet Queen Anne right across the street from the Rosewood and Tony and Mary Jane’s victorian abode just one block down toward downtown. So as a special gift, any guest of the reading at the LeDuc who purchases a book will receive a $50 voucher for a future stay at the Rosewood.

The Vermillion Falls in Hastings

Please join us Sat., Oct. 23rd, 9-noon to help plant native willows with other Vermillion Stewards volunteers, Friends of the Mississippi River members and the Department of Natural Resources!

By helping to cut and plant willow stakes, volunteers will be stabilizing streambank along the Vermillion River in the Aquatic Management Area near Farmington and not too far from Hastings. Adding more native willows will increase root mass in the soil and help hold the streambank in place, preventing it from eroding into the stream and impairing water quality and habitat, and thus protecting the river’s cold water trout fishery.

All supplies and guidance are provided. Registration is quick and simple. Individuals, families and groups are all welcome!

NEW! Centennial Trail Hike: Hike with naturalist Steve Robertsen on September 11. Meet at the Kekekabic Trail parking area at 3 PM. Wear sturdy shoes or boots and bring water. Hike time approximately 2 hours.

Early fall brings hints of color to the Gunflint Trail.  Moose maple are
beginning to turn red and the grasses are golden.  Days are frequently warm
and blue-skied, and nights pleasantly cool.

 3rd Annual Harvest Fest on Saturday, Oct. 10, from 10am to 5pm in Lowell Park/Downtown Stillwater. Includes live music, pumpkin weigh-off, chili cook-off and micro-brew beer tasting, pumpkin decorating and baking contests, and pumpkin/veggie carvers.
