Lanesboro St. Mane Theatre

Lanesboro St. Mane Theatre

Until the summer of 2007, the St. Mane Theatre in Lanesboro, Minnesota was the home of the Commonweal Theatre Company.   The St. Mane is being reborn by the Lanesboro Arts Center with frequent offerings throughout the year including film, live music, and live theatre performances.

Two documentary films will be shown at the St. Mane Theatre  the weekend of August 21-23, 2009: ‘Urban Explorers’ and ‘Fritz: The Walter Mondale Story.’  Audience members will have the opportunity to participate in a discussion with filmmaker Melody Gilbert after the 7:30 film on Saturday, Aug. 22.  Melody Gilbert is widely recognized as a fearless filmmaker in contemporary documentary cinema; she has been directing and producing for film and television for twenty years

Screening times:
Friday, Aug. 21, 7:30 p.m. – ‘Urban Explorers’
Saturday, Aug. 22, 3:00 p.m. – ‘Urban Explorers’
Saturday, Aug. 22, 7:30 p.m. – ‘Fritz: The Walter Mondale Story’ followed by a discussion with filmmaker Melody Gilbert
Sunday, Aug. 23, 3:00 p.m. – ‘Fritz: The Walter Mondale Story’

In  ‘Urban Explorers’ Gilbert turns the cameras on a group of individuals who are self-professed enthusiasts that explore subterranean destinations from abandoned caverns and tourist attractions to France’s famous forbidden catacombs.  The “urban explorers” who have names like Max Action and Katwoman, are absolutely fascinating characters.  The filmmaker fearlessly follows her characters on “missions” to abandoned hospitals and long-forgotten tourist attractions like the “house of the Future” in Orlando, Florida.  Melody Gilbert gets to the heart of the matter and provides a window into the sense of wonder and curiosity that drives these “explorers,” making them out to be fearless trailblazers instead of half-crazy trespassers.

Fritz: The Walter Mondale Story’ tells the story of the life and legacy of former Vice President Walter “Fritz” Mondale and his efforts to inspire a new generation to consider a life of public service.  Rare archival footage, family home videos, and interviews with President Jimmy Carter, Vice President Al Gore, Representative Geraldine Ferraro, Minnesota Governor Arne Carlson, friends, and family reveal a man who never wavered in his commitment to civil and human rights. Throughout his accomplished career—attorney general, senator, vice president, presidential candidate, ambassador, and professor—Mr. Mondale remained true to his small town roots, dedicated to helping others.  The film is narrated by Walter Mondale’s daughter, Eleanor Mondale.  As Walter ‘Fritz’ Mondale says, “It’s not about Democrats or Republicans.  It’s about what’s in your heart.”
